The 4C’s
CARAT is the measurement of a diamond’s weight. A carat is 200 milligrams. Larger diamonds are rare, and more valuable, so a 1-carat diamond is worth more than two ½-carat diamonds.
CLARITY is the measurement of inclusions in a diamond. These inclusions are mineral deposits or cracks from the creation of the diamond. They may look like crystals, pin points, clouds or feathers under magnification. The location of inclusions will determine the diamond’s worth because the mounting can hide some inclusion. The scale for inclusion ranges from F (flawless) to I (included).
COLOR is the measurement of the diamond’s lack of color. The clearer a diamond’s grade the more valuable it is. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has established a scale to rate the color. It ranges from D (Colorless) to Z. Icy whites (D-I) shimmer in white gold or platinum, whereas warmer colored diamonds (J-Z) covet a setting in yellow gold.
CUT is the angles and sizes of a diamond. When discussing the cut of a diamond, one refers to the quality of polish, exact size and the diamond’s facets. Of all the four Cs, only this one is due to a master artisan’s hand. The cut determines the diamond’s sparkle and shine.
