We desire designing personal jewelry here at Morrison Smith Fine and Custom Jewelers.

We hold to tradition view while shopping for jewelry—actually seeing what you are purchasing. Today with the advent of the internet people, buy many items without seeing the item until they own it. Most of the time, this approach works, but when shopping for jewelry, seeing is a valuable commodity. Diamonds must be seen. We rigorously inspect all precious stones before they are added to our collection.

We have assembled what some might think as an overabundant collection of master crafters, but we feel that everyone needs extra attention, which we are able to provide with our crew. Including Chuck, we have six design and repair jewelers. These master jewelers can assist you no matter what you have in mind. Whether it is needs a goldsmiths, the stone setters, the hand engraver, the machine engraver, the watchmaker, the bead stringer, Certified Graduate Gemologists, or even trained and experienced sales staff with gemological training in house, we can help you once you step through our doors. We are members of the American Gem Society, an ethical organization that help to educate and uphold strong values in the industry.

You should know a few terms before you search for the perfect diamond. These are Color, Cut, Clarity and Carat—better known as the 4 Cs.

Color - Diamonds are judged by their color. Diamonds can be any color, yet most have a white tint. Colorless diamonds are rare, and thus more valuable. However, depending on the mount, you may what a cooler or warmer tint to match your metal. Thus, color quality is critical to both beauty and value.

Cut - The cut, also known as the make, is the single aspect that we can manipulate. It affects the value of the diamond the most. The sparkle you see in a diamond derives from the cut because the cut makes the facets on the surface. These windows allow the light in the diamond refracting it within and reflecting it off the surface. This light then makes the diamond have fire and brilliance. There are different cuts that will make the diamond different. This is one instance when you will need to see the diamond to make your selection.

Clarity - "Inclusions" occur naturally in diamonds. They can be in different shapes and forms. The clarity of a diamond is judged by the number and location of such inclusions. When grading for clarity, the grader uses magnification and special lighting to evaluate the size, location, number, and color of all inclusions and blemishes. Though inclusions and blemishes will seldom affect a stone’s beauty, they do affect its price.

Carat - Carat refers to weight, and is 200 milligrams. In addition, one carat equals 100 points. Therefore, a half carat diamond is also only fifty points. Most rough diamonds weigh less than a carat. The larger the stone, the more rare it is, and the greater its value.

The value of a diamond can vary greatly from one of equal carat weight depending on the color, clarity and most importantly, the cut.
